NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) is a treatment that uses acupuncture, kinesiology and chiropractic to desensitize people to all kinds of allergies. It is practiced by health practitioners including doctors, acupuncturists, chiropractors and also can be taught to allergy sufferers themselves.
The principles of NAET are largely based on Chinese medicine which sees the body as being made up of channels (or meridians) for the flow of energy (called Qi in Chinese medicine). When this energy stagnates or does not flow in a harmonious way then there is illness with signs and symptoms that depend on the channel or organ affected. In acupuncture we use needles to facilitate the flow of Qi in the channels.
Dr. Devi Nambudripad, an American acupuncturist and chiropractor discovered this method in 1983 through treating her own allergies and began extensive research to develop a new, effective approach to the diagnosis and elimination of allergies.
NAET has become widespread in the United States and Dr. Nambudripad has trained over two thousand practitioners not only in the United States and Canada but also in Europe, Asia and Australasia.

An allergy is defined by Dr. Nambudripad as:
"an adverse
physical, physiological and/or psychological response of an individual
toward one or more substances also known as allergens"
To most people, these substances may harmless or well-tolerated, or even useful.
Much of today's food is denatured and contains toxins such as pesticides and food additives, exposing consumers to a wide range of allergens. Many people now suffer from immune-related conditions - ranging from allergies to food, pollens and other substances, to immune suppression or auto-immune diseases.
Allergies can be divided into the following categories:
Inhalants - smoke, pollens, pesticides and chemicals, perfumes,
paint, petrol, food smells - these give rise to a wide range of
symptoms
Ingestants - basically allergies to food and drink but
also include drugs and medicines, food additives, vitamin supplements
etc.
Contactants - that produce an allergic effect by contact
with the skin - poison ivy, cats and dogs, chemicals such as dyes,
nail polish, fabrics, formaldehyde - often giving rise to skin
problems
Injectants - allergies to insect and animal bites, vaccinations
etc.
Infectants - sensitivity to an infectious agent, such as
bacteria, viruses, vaccinations and immunization
Physical agents - sensitivity to heat, cold, damp, wind
or sensitivity to radiation from computers and TV or from the
sun are examples
Genetic factors - many allergies come from an inherited
disposition that may be triggered by other factors
Molds and fungi - these can be introduced into the body
in many different ways and produce varied reactions.
Emotional stressors - Emotional excess causes disturbance
in the flow of Qi. These can be termed emotional allergies.
Potentially we can be allergic to anything we come in contact with, including sunlight itself.
There are an increasing number of people who have universal allergies and are allergic to almost anything they come into contact with.
Undiagnosed allergies
are often the cause of common or chronic illnesses which when
left untreated can become serious or critical. Through symptoms,
the brain signals about the possible dangers if the energy blockages
remain within the body.
Signs of allergies may include:
muscle aches and joint pains
headaches
fatigue
indigestion and digestive disturbance
blurred vision
dizziness or lightheadedness
sleep disturbance
poor memory
depression
low libido or sexual malfunction
skin problems
PMS and other menstrual problems
sensitivity to heat or cold or changes in the weather
When an allergen enters or contacts the body it causes blockages in the energy channels, disrupting the normal flow of energy through the body. This energy blockage causes interference in communication between the brain and body via the nervous system which begins a chain-of-events that can develop into an allergic response. The results of energy imbalances in the body leads to a diminished state of health in one or more organ system.
NAET works by reprogramming the brain and nervous system and removing energy blockages, It detoxifies the system and allows the body to regain balance and function normally - to relax, absorb and assimilate appropriate nutrients from the food that once caused allergies, and to reach a state of optimum health.
NAET is natural, painless and non-invasive. This method can be used safely on anyone - infants, the elderly, as well as on animals. It can also be used on relatively healthy individuals with hidden allergies that could cause illness in the future.
NAET does not conflict with any medications that you may be taking such as antibiotics, steroids, antidepressants, chemotherapy etc. In fact it complements their use to treat for any side-effects and to maximize the effectiveness of the drug.
NAET is a synthesis of various medical disciplines such as Chinese medicine, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutrition.
There are two main techniques used for testing for allergies.
Electrodermal
testing
using the computerised Bio-Meridian Merdian Stress Assessment
System (MSAS), is used to test for sensitivities or allergies
of any description.
Measurements of electrical resistance on particular acupuncture points are taken to indicate where the body is stressed or weakened by exposure to foods, medicines, chemicals etc.
Muscle Response Testing (MRT) indicates the
presence of energy imbalances caused by allergens. A muscle which
would normally be strong will become weak in the presence of an
allergen.
The NAET treatment stimulates pressure points along the spine from the neck to the sacrum that correspond with the nerve plexuses of the various organ systems while the patient is holding a vial containing the allergen. After the treatment a strong muscle response test indicates that the body is no longer reacting to the allergen. Specific acupressure points are then massaged or acupuncture needles may be inserted for 20 minutes to stabilise the treatment.
The allergen must then be avoided for 25 hours after the treatment for best results. A patient should be retested for the allergy after 25 hours (up to a week after the treatment). If the patient's indicator muscle tests as very strong this is taken as a successful treatment.
Often mild allergies are cleared with one treatment but if the person is particularly allergic to the substance or from some reason were unable to completely avoid exposure, several treatment may be necessary. One is not normally 100% free from that allergy because there will be other nutrients in the food that have not yet been cleared.
Allergies are normally treated and cleared one at a time in a particular sequence.
Normally allergies to essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins, minerals and sugar are cleared first before treating specific foods or environmental allergens, viruses etc. This is because it has been found that the large majority of people presenting with allergies have problems with these nutrients and once these have been cleared often experience a marked improvement in health.
The next item to be cleared are phenolics. These are naturally-occuring chemicals that give a food its flavour, colour, texture etc. In food allergies it is often the phenolics that people are allergic to. Some of the phenolics are implicated in various conditions such as chronic fatigue, arthritis or fibromyalgia.
Examples of common foods and the phenolics they contain are:
APPLE: acetaldehyde, benzoic acid, caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, coumarin, gallic acid, genistein, malvin, menodione, quercetin and rutin
COW'S MILK: apiol, asparagine, benzoic acid, butyric acid, cinnamic acid, coumarin, oestrogen, eugenol, genistein, histamine, menodione, nicotine, phenylisocyanate, piperonal, quercetin and rutin
Some phenolics are very common. For example, rutin and quercetin are found in approximately 100 everyday foods, and others such as coumarin and malvin are found in 30 different foods.. This means that if one is allergic to one phenolic one can react to many different foods. Clearing allergies to phenolics is a very effective way of eliminating food allergies.
After treating the basic allergens and phenolics, depending on the condition, one or several ot the following groups could be tested and treated:
amino acids
hormones
environmental allergens (such as dust, pollen, heavy metals, pesticides
etc.)
infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria or parasites
NAET will be part of
a comprehensive treatment that may include:
acupuncture
vitamin and mineral supplements and herbal formulae to support
the immune system and address your underlying condition
detoxification
programme
nutritional and lifestyle advice
You will be provided with information for each of the allergens being treated so that you will know in advance what you can eat after treatment and what has to be avoided. This will also allow you to keep your own record of your progress.
You will be taught the basics of this method so that you are able to test and treat yourself. For instance when shopping in the supermarket you can use muscle response testing to check whether a particular food is good for you or not.
You will be provided with a set of guidelines for treatment. These should be followed to ensure maximum effectiveness of treatment. To see the guidelines click here
